Stoke City's Glenn Whelan was superb at Swansea, fans agree

Stoke City’s Glenn Whelan was impressive against Swansea City.

Stoke City star Glenn Whelan put in one of his finest games of the season as he helped the Potters to an impressive 1-0 victory over Gary Monk’s Swansea City.

The Potters headed into the clash as underdogs, having one just once on their previous 18 visits to Swansea and came up against a team who were previously unbeaten at home this season.

However, a Krkic Bojan penalty in the early stages gave Mark Hughes’ men something to hold on to and they brilliantly denied the Swans a route back in to the match.

The pressing from the front was good and the team shape was spot on. As for individuals, Glenn Whelan in the middle of the park was utterly superb as he dominated from start to finish.

As per the table provided by Opta, Whelan contributed greatly over a number of key areas and was rightfully considered man of the match by a number of supporters and pundits alike.

In possession, he took 77 touches and made 58 accurate passes, more than any other player and his average success rate of 89.2% was bettered only by Marko Arnautovic.

Stoke were relatively comfortable throughout and the reason why their defence was rarely threatened was because the pressing and defensive work from the front was admirable.

Whelan shielded his back four as well as he has done all season, contributing with two tackles, two interceptions, three effective clearances, six duel winners and ten ball recoveries.

It was a deserved win for Stoke and their third on the bounce, lifting them up to 11th in the table

Taking to Twitter after the final whistle, fans were understandably delighted with many reserving special praise for their superb Republic of Ireland international midfielder.
