Sunderland will host the Magpies at the Stadium of Light, and former Liverpool defender Carragher suggested that the home team will win it.
“Newcastle will go bouncing into that derby game full of confidence but the worry for them is Norwich scored two, hit the woodwork twice and they still looked like they would concede goals,” the former England international said on the Monday Night Football show on Sky Sports on Monday evening.
“Sam’s gone to West Brom, taken a 1-0 defeat which is poor for them but you’d expect him to keep it tight, be organised and make it difficult for Newcastle and there will be opportunities at the other end.
“I’d still make Sunderland slight favourites because they’re at home and the record psychologically for them going into a derby game.”
Playing at the Stadium of Light will certainly give Sunderland an advantage, and so will the fact that it is new manager Sam Allardyce’s first home game in charge.
One suspects that the former West Ham United boss will make it tight at the back, but Newcastle’s chances of winning cannot be written off.
The Magpies registered a stunning 6-2 victory over Norwich City at St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Sunday, and they will be full of confidence.
A single goal at the Stadium of Light could decide the outcome of the Wear-Tyne derby.
