Alderweireld raves about Dembele, says he's very good defensively

The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has heaped praise on his team-mate and compatriot.

Toby Alderweireld has lauded Mousa Dembele's defensive work for Tottenham and feels he excelled against Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon, according to the club's official website.

Dembele was last week linked with a January move to Napoli by Tuttosport but his performance against Liverpool may have changed things a little...

During that display, Alderweireld was particularly impressed with the 28-year-old's defensive work, suggesting it was like Dembele had never left the team.

Whether it is because he is his team-mate with Belgium or not, the Spurs centre-back clearly has a soft spot for the midfielder's talents.

The Belgian said of his team-mate and compatriot: "I think he was very good defensively. He was very strong and it was like he was never gone from the team.

"He’s worked very hard to be fit again after the game against Everton and I’m very happy for him. He played a very good game when we needed him."

In the comments section on HITC Sport after the Liverpool game, there seemed to be a great appreciation of Dembele's defensive work from Tottenham fans.

Going forward, supporters still feel the 28-year-old can affect things more. But, defensively, the Belgian certainly adds a lot to the side and works well with fellow countryman Alderweireld.

Eric Dier does the same, of course, but it's clear the Tottenham centre-back would prefer Dembele to stay at White Hart Lane in January based on his comments.
