The Dutch international attacker was widely regarded as an excellent addition when the Magpies acquired his signature this past summer and so far he is proving that tag correct.
Despite his team’s struggles, Wijnaldum has been an impressive performer and his talent shone through during Newcastle’s 6-2 demolition of recent Premier League newcomers Norwich City.
The 24-year-old scored the Magpies’ first hat-trick since 2011, and then his late 25-yard strike stamped his name alongside Alan Shearer in the club’s history books with a truly unique achievement.
2 - Wijnaldum is only the 2nd Newcastle United player ever to score 4+ goals in a single PL match (Shearer v Sheff Weds, Sep 1999). Heroic.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) October 18, 2015
Scoring four goals in a single match doesn’t happen too often, but considering Wijnaldum isn’t predominantly a centre-forward it’s a rather astonishing feat.
In an intriguing clash, Newcastle really released the shackles in the second period and all the nerves had disappeared the moment the moment Aleksandar Mitrovic restored the hosts’ two-goal lead.
Picking out Wijanldum’s best goal of the afternoon is tough, but from Steve McClaren’s perspective he will be delighted with his team’s fifth as they carved Norwich open with an impressive team move.
After a somewhat worrying start to the campaign, Wijnaldum and his teammates will be full of confidence heading in to next weekend’s derby clash with Sunderland.
