Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has suggested on the club’s official website that teammate Mousa Dembele is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Vertonghen made the comments about his Belgium international teammate following Tottenham’s goalless draw with Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon.
Dembele started the game, which ended in a goalless draw, and played for the entire 90 minutes.
The 28-year-old gave a good account of himself against Liverpool. The former Fulham star took one shot, had a pass accuracy of 91%, attempted five dribbles, won 75% of his tackles and 25% of his headers, and made five interceptions and three clearances.
Vertonghen was impressed with Dembele’s display and told Tottenham’s official website: “He might be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and everyone agrees on that.”
It is quite a confident claim from Vertonghen, as Dembele has not been entirely convincing at Tottenham since joining the North London outfit from Fulham in 2012.
The Belgian midfielder can be superb on his day, but does he have the consistency? Is he good enough to play for the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea?
Perhaps a reason why Dembele divides opinion is that he has not always been played in the same position.
The former AZ star is a very versatile midfielder who can play on the right, in a more central role or in an advanced position.
