Steve Howey compared Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba to former Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal star Sol Campbell on the Sky Sports Now show on Sky Sports News HQ on Friday morning (October 16, 2015).
"He is better at centre-half than he is at right-back," said former Newcastle defender Howey. "I think he had a torrid (time) against Man United when they doubled up on him.
"He is big, he is strong, he reminds me of a little bit of a Sol Campbell-type (player). He is a big, big lad, he won’t get muscled out. His distribution kind of lets him down, but I think he will do all right."
Mbemba joined Newcastle from Belgian giants Anderlecht in the summer transfer window amid hype and expectations.
The DR Congo international is regarded as a very promising young defender, and he has already established himself in the Magpies’ first team.
The 21-year-old has featured in eight Premier League matches for Newcastle so far this season, creating one chance in the process. Mbemba has a pass accuracy of 79%, and has won 13 headers, six dribbles and 24 tackles.
Newcastle are at the foot of the Premier League table at the moment with just three points from eight matches.
Steve McClaren’s side will take on Norwich City at St. James’ Park in the league later today.
