Leeds boss explains why he started Scott Wootton ahead of Sam Byram

The German has been discussing Leeds' team selection against Brighton.

Leeds United head coach Uwe Rosler says Scott Wootton started ahead of Sam Byram at right-back against Brighton due to the 'defensive qualities' he possesses, according to BBC Radio Leeds.

Indeed, with Charlie Taylor out with a viral infection, Leeds went with Gaetano Berardi at left-back, putting Wotton at right-back instead of turning to Byram.

And Rosler says the selection was made due to how the Yorkshire side want to play and the defensive qualities the 24-year-old possesses.

Rosler told BBC Radio Leeds: "Yes. [Wootton was selected] because of his defensive qualities and because of the way we want to play now."

Leeds fans, of course, were very sceptical indeed over Wootton's selection ahead of Byram.

Expressing their views on Twitter, many of them felt owner Massimo Cellino has influenced Rosler's picking of the team to exclude Byram - who has not yet signed a new deal at Elland Road.

It's a messy situation but Leeds need to somehow get past all this and put some points on the board.

Next up is a trip to Craven Cottage to play Fulham on Wednesday night. Can Rosler's men finally get a result? Or is more misery in store for the Yorkshire side in the coming weeks?
