You can't blame Tim Sherwood for Aston Villa's lack of quality, says Chris Sutton

Aston Villa have failed to register a victory since the opening day of the Premier League season.

Chris Sutton has told BBC Sport that Tim Sherwood should not be blamed for the lack of quality in Aston Villa's squad this season.

Sherwood has come under pressure after the Claret and Blues' awful start to the new campaign, but Sutton has defended his former teammate.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers striker believes that Sherwood has been handed a difficult job at Villa Park, and says that it is wrong to solely blame his friend for the club's struggles.

"You cannot blame Tim for the squad not being strong enough if it is not just down to him, but he is the one who is being criticised because Villa have not won since the opening day," he said.

Sherwood's struggles to find the winning formula at Villa have partly been attributed to the issues over their summer spending.

The 46-year-old boss identified a number of targets with Premier League experience, but Villa's board failed to land many of them, and their are frictions forming within the camp, according to a report in the Daily Mail

Sherwood will have to make do with what he has for now, though, as Villa are in desperate need of Premier League points.

The Midlands outfit are four points adrift of safety, and they face a very difficult game against Chelsea this weekend.
