Tottenham Hotspur boss speaks highly of Espanyol 'keeper Pau Lopez

Mauricio Pochettino is backing the youngster to be a success in Barcelona.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino took the opportunity to head out to Spain and catch up with some old friends in Barcelona.

Whilst there he conducted some radio interviews, as reported by Pericos Online.

He spoke about his former team Espanyol, with whom he spent many years both as a player and manager.

Specifically he spoke about their young goalkeeper, Pau Lopez.

The 20-year-old has come into the first-team this season to replace Kiko Casilla - who joined Real Madrid. He has played all seven of Espanyol's games this season and found himself in for criticism for some of his less than impressive performances.

However, Pochettino is a big fan of the player and gave him his backing, stating:

"I know Pau and I have to be quiet because I think he is a goalie with incredible potential, and it is normal many times these things happen.

"You can not always be 10 points performances or better in each match, but this is football and we have to accept this.

"(Discussing passion of the fans) The people are Catalan, it is sometimes difficult understand when you are the player, when I was it was hard."

Of course Spurs already have their very own goalkeeper. Hugo Lloris is a top drawer stopper, one of the best in the world and in Michel Vorm they have a high-class back-up.

Poch was in no way implying that Lopez could one day be a target but merely that he knows he has the talent to succeed at his former club.

Which should prove a massive confidence boost for the young stopper.
