The Spaniard said: “Yes, we did [try to sign him]. We followed Martial when he moved to Monaco, at that time he couldn’t get any playing time, he was with the Under-21s for France. We had the opportunity, but it never materialised.”
Martial, 19, moved to Monaco in the summer of 2013, signing from Lyon after progressing through their youth academy.
Despite being highly rated with the Lyon, he was struggling to make an impact in the first-team, and only played four games in all competitions during his last season with the club.
This lack of first-team football did not change when he moved to the Principality side, increasing his output to 15 first-team games in the 2013/14 campaign, although he established himself the following season.
It was his form last term which saw Manchester United move to sign the youngster in the summer, and he has so far started his career with the Red Devils in great style, scoring four goals in his first seven games.
It was during his time with Lyon that Everton were tracking Martial, knowing that he was not playing enough considering his incredible talent.
The Toffees wanted to bring him to Merseyside in the summer that Monaco were following him, but instead the youngster decided to transfer to the Principality club, staying in Ligue 1.
It appears as if Martial made the correct decision considering how his career has progressed, but Everton will be regretting having missed out on a player who looks to have all the talent to get to the top of the game.
