Arsenal legend Martin Keown has written in The Daily Mail that he understands why Everton’s Ross Barkley has been compared to former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United star Paul Gascoigne.
Former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder Gascoigne is an England legend, having helped the Three Lions progress to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup.
The Englishman was one of the best players in the world during his time, and many Premier League followers, including Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle, have said that Barkley reminds them of him (click here to read more).
Former Arsenal star Keown has written in The Daily Mail why he thinks that the comparisons are justified.
“There have been comparisons with Paul Gascoigne and I can see why - he goes past people like they’re not there,” the former England international wrote in The Daily Mail. “He has always had a confident mentality – he knows he can make the difference in any game.”
“I think he’ll become a top player,” added Keown. “People will say, 'don’t expose to pressure'. But I think he’ll thrive on it, especially now he has a licence to make mistakes.
“Look at Glenn Hoddle – a lot of the things he tried didn’t come off, but we only remember the things that did.”
Barkley is a very talented young midfielder and has already earned 17 caps for England.
The Everton man is just 21 years of age and has a long way to go, but he does certainly look like a player who can go on to achieve great things.
