The young Manchester United goalkeeper would be the perfect short-term option for Leeds United.
Following the news that Leeds United goalkeeper Ross Turnbull has undergone surgery on a broken ankle, Uwe Rosler’s side could do with a new stopper to act as back-up for current number one Marco Silvestri.
But what if Leeds could sign a player who could not only challenge the Italian for a starting spot, but potentially do a better job between the sticks and force Silvestri to up his own game as a result?
Leeds and Manchester United may be fierce rivals on the pitch, but they have done their fair share of transfer business off it, and in Sam Johnstone Louis van Gaal’s side have a player who could solve one of the Whites’ problems instantly.
The 22-year-old is currently third-choice behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero at Old Trafford and as a result he would no doubt love to get more first-team football under his belt.
During a loan spell at Preston North End last season, Johnstone showed what a quality player he is, keeping 13 clean sheets in 25 matches and delivering a series of fantastic displays, and he has the ability to step straight into Leeds’ starting XI if Rosler is unhappy with Silvestri’s form thus far.
Leeds also have the likes of Charlie Horton and Eric Grimes on their books and the latter is likely to be on the bench for this weekend’s match with Brighton & Hove Albion, but with Turnbull out for a while Rosler would be sensible to put a call in to Manchester United.
