The 23-year-old striker scored the only goal of the game in Tuesday night's 1-0 friendly victory over the USA.
Costa Rica’s friendly clash with the US national team at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, saw the 50-times capped front man net a 70th-minute strike to a hand his side a 1-0 win, as the visitors dominated proceedings from start to finish.
It was the Gunners youngster’s first international goal since scoring against Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup but he could have had more on the night, having proved a real menace to the US defence with his pace and direct running up top.
He now returns to Arsenal with a much-needed boost of confidence but, having failed to make a Premier League appearance since last December, it is going to take more than that to push him back into Arsene Wenger’s plans.
The little-used forward has constantly been linked with a move away from the club over the past two seasons and, despite signing a contract extension before spending the second half of last term on loan at Villarreal, the latest reports have suggested that Newcastle United are interested in his signature [h/t The Chronicle].
Nevertheless, Tuesday’s performance was certainly encouraging for anyone who has been calling for Wenger to give him more of a chance of late, as a number of fans who were watching the game took to Twitter to praise the Ticos star for his game-winning impact.
I don't understand how Joel Campbell isn't getting minutes at Arsenal— davdbenjeman ElTri (@davdbenjeman) October 14, 2015

If the Joel Campbell Arsenal version was the Costa Rica version he would be starting right winger.— Ben (@Ben_Duronio) October 13, 2015
