Tottenham's Kevin Wimmer sends message after Austria make history

The Tottenham Hotspur defender has seen his country reach Euro 2016 in brilliant style.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has taken to Twitter to celebrate an historic achievement for him and his Austrian teammates.

Prior to now Austria had never reached the European Championships through a qualifying campaign, with their one and only appearance to date when they co-hosted the tournament in 2008. But that has now changed after they topped Group G with an outstanding 28 points from a possible 30.

It was quite a way for Austria to make history and the Tottenham player will now be looking ahead to the summer when he will be joining some of his Spurs teammates in the prestigious competition.

Wimmer signed for Tottenham from German club Cologne in the summer but he has had to be patient for his chances, featuring just twice for Mauricio Pochettino’s side to date.

Those appearances came in the Europa League against FK Qarabag and the Capital One Cup against Arsenal, but he looked solid on both occasions and is surely now regarded as Tottenham’s third choice centre-back ahead of Federico Fazio.

Wimmer is very much a squad player for his country right now with only two senior caps to date, but if he can get a few more chances at Tottenham this season he could yet earn more minutes for his county ahead of a massive summer.

Following their achievements Wimmer wrote a succinct but heartfelt message on social media which simply read, “History!”
