Steve Thompson? Redfearn has already made a decision over his Rotherham assistant

Neil Redfearn is not seeking to reunite with Steve Thompson, who he worked with at Leeds United before his shock suspension.

Neil Redfearn has suggested he will not be seeking to bring Steve Thompson in to work alongside him at new club Rotherham.

Speaking at his press conference on Monday, Redfearn explained he was planning to work with current Rotherham employee Eric Black, who had been caretaker boss after Steve Evans resigned.

At Leeds last season, Redfearn pushed hard to appoint Steve Thompson, and convince him to leave his role at Huddersfield, and initially it seemed to have the desired effect.

When Thompson came in, Leeds' performance defensively were much improved, and all seemed to be going well until he was suspended in early April, falling out with sporting director Nicola Salerno.

Thompson has since taken a job at Preston North End, and told the Lancashire Evening Post last month he was never given an explanation for his suspension at Leeds.

Despite his pal's qualities, Redfearn is wise to stick with Eric Black, a man who knows Rotherham well, and can advise him and get him up to speed, with coaching experience at Coventry City also on his CV.
