Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren: Papiss Cisse has been unfairly criticised this season

Papiss Cisse has scored just once in his last six appearances for Newcastle United.

Steve McClaren has told the Chronicle that he believes Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse has been getting unfair criticism this season.

Cisse has seen his performances come under fire from television pundits and supporters alike, with his showings judged to have been well short of the quality required to lead the line for the Magpies.

However, McClaren has defended the Senegal international, and says that his poor form has been exaggerated by the media.

“He’s another one who has undeservedly been getting criticism," McClaren stressed. "This is football. With TV and everything now, they sensationalise everything.”

Cisse has scored just once in six appearances for Newcastle this season, but it is his supposed lack of effort which has been received the most scrutiny.

The 30-year-old has always been a poacher and, without a strong goal return, he is not offering the team enough to justify his place.

Cisse has not played in either of Newcastle's last two matches, as Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez have started to form a partnership up front.

Mitrovic and Perez have shown flashes of class during their time on the pitch together, and the pair seem to have knocked Cisse down the pecking order at St. James' Park.
