While explaining that Klopp could get the best out of summer signing Roberto Firmino, the former Liverpool defender stated: “Others, too, will be thinking this could be great for them. Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Joe Allen, even Dejan Lovren - they’ll all have points to prove.”
Neither Lallana nor Lovren has looked particularly great for Liverpool since joining from Premier League rivals Southampton in the summer of 2014.
England international attacking midfielder Lallana was not often played in his preferred role by Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers, but even then it must be said that he has left much to be desired.
Lovren was superb for Southampton during the 2013-14 season, but at Anfield he has been very disappointing and was even dropped by Rodgers during the 2014-15 campaign.
The Croatia international defender has made a string of errors, and he will have to step up his game under Klopp if he wants to be a vital part of his team.
Allen has been on the books of Liverpool since 2012, but he is largely an average midfielder who is not guaranteed a place in the Reds’ starting lineup.
Can, though, is one of the better players at Liverpool, and he has been a success on Merseyside since his arrival from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2014.
The 21-year-old has shown his versatility by playing in defence despite being a midfielder by trade, and he could establish himself as a key player for Klopp as the season progresses.
