Tottenham winger Andros Townsend has told the Daily Mail that Manchester United's Luke Shaw should avoid going to Euro 2016 next summer.
Shaw, 20, suffered a double leg break against PSV Eindhoven in September, meaning he will miss virtually the entire season, possibly all of it, depending on his recovery.
That injury means that Shaw is likely to miss out on a place in Roy Hodgson's England squad for Euro 2016 in France next summer, which is a huge blow for the player and his country, with Shaw showing impressive development in 2015.
Instead, it looks like Shaw will have to watch England games on TV - especially if he heeds the advice given to him by Tottenham's Andros Townsend.
The winger fired England to the World Cup with vital performances against Montenegro and Poland, but missed out on the tournament due to injury, just as Shaw will next summer.
Now, Townsend has warned Shaw, in an interview with the Daily Mail, that going to the tournament as a pundit - as he did with ITV - was a bad idea, and urged Shaw not to make the same mistake, even though it did spur him on having been so close to the action but so far away from playing.
"There is no bigger disappointment than missing out through injury and I feel for Luke," said Townsend. "He was having a fantastic season and was one of the best English players in the Premier League so it's going to be difficult for him – I won't lie. It was harder than I thought for me. Beforehand I thought it would be alright, but once I was there and the tournament was going on it was incredibly difficult to handle. Being there as a pundit made it worse, being that close but not being involved."
"But it did give me the drive to push on, seeing the World Cup as close as I could, so that has given me the desire to make sure I am involved when the next tournament comes around. He has time on his side, he's only 20 so there will be plenty of other tournaments for him and he should take that positive from a negative situation. He's Man United's first-choice left back and I am sure he'll be alright," he added.
Shaw may well have offers to be a pundit during England games, but Townsend is adamant that he should stay away from the competition, serving up a stern warning to the Manchester United youngster.
