Sherwood made a number of summer signings, but few of them have paid off so far, with Villa recording just one win so far this season - a 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Bournemouth on the opening day of the Premier League season.
Sherwood is clearly struggling just eight months in to his role at Villa Park, and the report from The Mirror suggests that the former Spurs boss has just two games to save his job, with Brendan Rodgers being lined up as a possible replacement.
The 42-year-old lost his job as Liverpool manager just last week, and a move to revitalise a sleeping giant like Villa could be appealing to the Northern Irish boss, who almost won the Premier League just 18 months ago - something many have forgotten.
Since the report was released, Villa fans have been taking to Twitter to discuss the possible appointment of Rodgers - and a recurring theme is clear.
Villa supporters are virtually unanimous in their support of appointing Rodgers should Sherwood lose his job, with many believing that he has the ability to get Villa away from the relegation zone, and help develop their young talent such as Jack Grealish and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy.
Wonder how true this Sherwood story is? But Rodgers likely to come in if true yes please! Anyone who wouldn't want him are ridiculous #avfc— Mylooo! (@MyloAVFC) October 11, 2015
Rodgers at #avfc good manager but his brand of football can be boring at times, plus I can't see it working with the players villa have got— hoppo (@HopkinsBen) October 11, 2015
Like sherwood alot, would love to see him turn it around but feel rodgers will do a betta job write now, he wont be available for long #avfc— Dean Flynn (@DeanFlynn85) October 11, 2015
I'd be very happy with Rodgers at #avfc. Not good news for Ilori though!— Andy (@AndyVilla80) October 11, 2015
Looking at the tweets it's Fair to say Tim is a dead man walking,it was always going to be a short term fix,I'd go and get Rodgers #avfc— Karl Fisher (@karlosavfc) October 11, 2015
IF Rodgers is appointed, I'm sure the youth will be developed and passing should improve, at the very least, give him a chance #AVFC— Jamie Wilcox (@The_WhiteHeskey) October 11, 2015
Feel #avfc have to act now to save our season. Rodgers in.— Mr_Holte (@reillyavfc1987) October 11, 2015
Personally I think think sherwood should be sacked now and rodgers bought in immediately, Tims incompetence will get worse I feel #avfc— Tony Ellis (@yorkybrum73) October 11, 2015
Villa fans seem keen on the idea of appointing Rodgers, and his track record is actually impressive. Promotion with Swansea City in 2011 was followed by a strong debut season in the Premier League, and whilst his Liverpool tenure did end on a sour note, he had plenty of highs during his time at Anfield.
The Reds almost won the Premier League title, and Rodgers helped get the best out of players such as Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.
With no expectations of a top four push, Rodgers may well be able to build something long-lasting at Villa, and Sherwood can't quite match his credentials as a Premier League manager - making Rodgers a perfect candidate for Villa should they be looking for a new manager soon.
