According to a report in the Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have joined the race to sign Everton’s John Stones as they seek defensive reinforcements.
The Catalans have experienced a somewhat difficult star the season, losing at the likes of Celta Vigo and Sevilla while showing uncharacteristic weaknesses at the back.
Argentine star Javier Mascherano has been struggling for fitness, while French centre-back Jeremy Mathieu and Spanish ace Marc Bartra have both been woefully out of form.
Boss Luis Enrique is said to be keen on shoring up his defence in January, and the latest reports in Mundo Deportivo highlights John Stones as one of the standout candidates for the job.
No need to sell:
Following the new TV deals associated with the Premier League, the financial rewards for clubs like Everton are so huge that there is no longer any pressure on them to sell their better players.
Before, a club like Chelsea or Manchester City would take an interest and a sale would be inevitable. Nowadays, that’s not the case and Stones is proof of a radical change in mentality.
The Toffees stood firm among strong interest in the centre-back, and unless a ridiculous offer comes in, they’re not forced to sell even if the player has his heart set on a move.
Barcelona’s interest in the talented defender isn’t unexpected, yet the Catalans will know full well that unless they’re prepared to pay vast sums, even they won’t be able to break Everton’s resolve.
