Graphic: The best Midlands XI so far, featuring Leicester and Villa stars

Pre Kick Off

The best Premier League XI featuring stars from Leicester City, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City.

After eight games of the Premier League campaign gone, new signings will have settled and players will be reaching peak fitness for the upcoming challenges ahead.

It has been quite a contrasting story for a number of the Midlands-based Premier League sides so far, with Leicester City soaring up the table while Aston Villa struggle with just four points to their name.

Still, all four teams have had some outstanding individual performances on occasions and each side has at least one member which makes it into the Midlands best XI so far this season.

Back five:

Stoke City’s Jack Butland has been in phenomenal form, earning his side a number of valuable points so far with his standout performance coming during the 1-1 draw at Nrowich City in August.

The back four consists of Aston Villa’s Jordan Amavi at left-back, Stoke’s Geoff Cameron and West Bromwich Albion’s Craig Dawson in the middle and Leicester’s Ritchie de Laet at right-back.

Despite his side’s disappointing start, Amavi has been a real standout for Villa and currently boasts the highest number of interceptions in the Premier League.

Midfield:

Another one of Villa’s summer signing Idrissa Gueye makes the XI, with the defensive midfielder settling in to Villa’s side as Fabian Delph’s replacement remarkably well.

Gueye is joined by Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater and West Brom’s James Morrison, the latter being far and away the Baggies’ best player so far this season.

The Scotland international has netted twice and added a further two assists for Tony Pulis’ men.

Attack:

In traditional 4-3-3 system, the front three have to belong to Leicester considering they’ve been among the most exciting attacking forces in the Premier League to date.

The Foxes have notched 17 goals so far this term, with exciting trio Jamie Vardy, Algeria international Riyad Mahrez and former Villa man Marc Albrighton accounting for 13 of them.

Claudio Ranieri has done a fine job at the King Power stadium thus far, and keeping his attacking trio fit will prove imperative in their bid to finish in the European places come next May.
