The Leeds youngster needs to make sure he doesn't disappear off the radar at Elland Road.
That's why the 21-year-old should grasp his loan chance at Bury with both hands and send his parent club a statement of intent.
Indeed, there has been the odd comparison of Erwin to Nicky Ajose on Twitter after his move to Bury and the link is an apt one.
Ajose, too, was brought to Leeds for his potential - even if that move was never as wise as the Erwin one looked this summer. But, after being given limited game time, it became clear the young forward wouldn't work out at Elland Road.
He then did reasonably well on loan at Crewe Alexandra but not well enough to convince anyone at Leeds - nor did he impress enough during pre-season under Uwe Rosler, despite being given a chance.
There are similarities with Erwin. There may be a different plan with the 21-year-old in that he will likely be given an opportunity at Leeds long term.
But it was telling that the young forward was loaned out when the Yorkshire side could very well have attempted to use him for the first team. They are not exactly firing from all cylinders in the final third.
During his first start for Bury, Erwin was subbed after 53 minutes. It looks as though it'll take him a short while to adapt to his new surroundings. He absolutely has to take his chance, though, or he could well end up just like Ajose.
Leeds need points right now, which means they won't show any sympathy to players who don't look sharp enough.
