Why Newcastle fans should feel sorry for Georginio Wijnaldum

St James Park

Georginio Wijnaldum joined Newcastle United from PSV in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United are having a poor season and find themselves at the foot of the Premier League table at the moment.

While head coach Steve McClaren has come under huge pressure, the players also need to take their share of the blame.

One of the players who is not playing to the best of his abilities is midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle from Dutch giants PSV In the summer transfer window amid hype and expectations.

The Netherlands international midfielder has scored two goals and created 10 chances in eight Premier League appearances so far this season.

Wijnaldum has a pass accuracy of 85% and a shot accuracy of 60%, and has won three headers, 17 dribbles and four tackles.

True, the Dutchman has not done exactly as well as he was expected to, but Newcastle fans should still feel sorry for him.

The main reason why Newcastle supporters should feel for Wijnaldum is that he has left a club in the Champions League and joined a team struggling for Premier League survival.

Defending Dutch champions PSV are fourth in the Eredivisie table at the moment with 17 points from eight matches, just two points behind leaders Ajax.

Phillip Cocu’s side are ahead of Manchester United in the Champions League Group B and actually defeated the Red Devils at home on Matchday 1.

Wijnaldum was one of the best players for PSV last season; now he is playing with some very average footballers in a team who are at at the foot of the league table.

One wonders if Wijnaldum is regretting his decision to join Newcastle in the summer transfer window…
