West Ham United took the chance to have a behind-closed-doors friendly today against Reading whilst many of their players were away on international duty.
It was certainly a useful and entertaining affair.
Reading won the fixture 4-3 but West Ham will be pleased that they got plenty of minutes, and a goal, from Andy Carroll whilst Enner Valencia also made his comeback from an ankle problem.
The star performance however from a West Ham perspective would have to be from Mauro Zarate. The Argentine attacker scored twice in the game both goals absolute screamers.
The West Ham twitter account even shared the efforts. His first goal came from some silky skills in the box and then a stunning strike into the top corner. The second goal was a superb long range strike after taking the ball down on the chest. His strike is certainly just a sign of what he is capable of in a West Ham shirt if he can remain fit for the rest of the season.
Last term he failed to make the grade at West Ham. He was eventually loanees out by Sam Allardyce to QPR - a move that also proved a disaster.
He will hope that these two strikes will have him firmly in Slaven Bilic's first-team plans.
