Scotland were dealt a heartbreaking blow to their Euro 2016 hopes on Thursday evening.
Despite leading Poland 2-1 heading into injury time, the Tartan Army contrived to shoot themselves in the foot by conceding an equalising goal with the last kick of the game, courtesy of Robert Lewandowski.
It was from a free-kick, which hit one post before being pushed over the line, meaning that Scotland can not now qualify for the Finals tournament next summer.
Despite that heart wrenching goal, Scotland were actually very impressive in the game, fighting back from a one-goal deficit to lead 2-1, thanks to goals from Matt Ritchie and Steven Fletcher.
It was Fletcher’s goal which truly highlighted the game, curling a first-time shot from the edge of the box past Lukasz Fabianski. It was a fantastic strike by the Sunderland man, but his overall performance was top class.
Leading the line by himself, he was holding the ball up, challenging defenders, and becoming an all-round nuisance for the Poland defence.
It was a performance which did much to show up Fletcher’s weekly performances for Sunderland, and following the game, Black Cats fans took to Twitter to ask why the 28-year-old can not perform like that at the Stadium of Light.
Some might say Fletcher and O'Shea playing like behemoths because they're playing for a team they REALLY care about? No real #safc links...— Daniel (@dan429366) October 9, 2015
I still think Fletcher is our best forward. Just his ankles are made of glass. Definitely don't want to lose him on a free next summer #safc— Daniel Graham Parker (@dgp202) October 8, 2015
Fletcher was immense against West Ham. I'm not overly surprised. He does have that in his locker. Consistently is the key for him. #safc— AMc (@Andymccabe29) October 8, 2015
Fletcher has that quality all the time, whether or not he wants to work hard enough to show it or not is the question. #safc— Lewis (@lewisinho) October 8, 2015
Weve got too many players at SAFC like Fletcher who only turn it on when they can be arsed. Its the main problem we have imo, bad attitudes— Gary Baker (@GazbSAFC) October 8, 2015
Expertly curled 20-yarder into top corner from Steven Fletcher. Now if only he could produce that for #safc.Mind, two goals in two games now— Football Echo (@footballechoNE) October 8, 2015
