Sunderland striker Fletcher put in a fantastic performance for Scotland on Thursday evening.

Scotland were dealt a heartbreaking blow to their Euro 2016 hopes on Thursday evening.

Despite leading Poland 2-1 heading into injury time, the Tartan Army contrived to shoot themselves in the foot by conceding an equalising goal with the last kick of the game, courtesy of Robert Lewandowski.

It was from a free-kick, which hit one post before being pushed over the line, meaning that Scotland can not now qualify for the Finals tournament next summer.

Despite that heart wrenching goal, Scotland were actually very impressive in the game, fighting back from a one-goal deficit to lead 2-1, thanks to goals from Matt Ritchie and Steven Fletcher.

It was Fletcher’s goal which truly highlighted the game, curling a first-time shot from the edge of the box past Lukasz Fabianski. It was a fantastic strike by the Sunderland man, but his overall performance was top class.

Leading the line by himself, he was holding the ball up, challenging defenders, and becoming an all-round nuisance for the Poland defence.

It was a performance which did much to show up Fletcher’s weekly performances for Sunderland, and following the game, Black Cats fans took to Twitter to ask why the 28-year-old can not perform like that at the Stadium of Light.
