Should Everton use Leighton Baines in midfield as Brendan Galloway impresses?

The young defender has impressed while the full back has been out injured, leaving manager Roberto Martinez with a big decision to make.

When Leighton Baines returns to full fitness for Everton, manager Roberto Martinez will have a big decision on his hands.

The left back position in the Blues defence has been his for a number of years, with him firmly establishing himself as Everton’s and England’s first choice full back.

In his absence though, youngster Brendan Galloway has come into the side and more than impressed.

Martinez may not likely be keen on disrupting a currently settled and solid back four, while he is sure to want to allow the youngster to continue his fine run of form rather than halting it.

What then, should be done with Baines given he is still very much a key player at Goodison Park?

A move into defensive midfield could be the option for the defender, with Martinez certainly having thought about such an idea for some time.

In fact, he has even travelled with his star full back in the past to watch Bayern Munich, and more importantly Phillip Lahm, in recent years in order to assess how Pep Guardiola has done a similar thing with the German.

And with Galloway impressing, it could be a viable option for Everton when he returns. Gareth Barry is not getting any younger, and Baines could prove a suitable replacement in future.

Baines also boasts a much better passing ability than the veteran midfielder, and comes out in terms of fitness as well, meaning he could boast a noticeable upgrade for the Blues without them losing the experience Barry brings to the side.

The transition to midfield would likely be a smooth one for him and the side, as it has been for Lahm and Bayern Munich so far.

If Galloway continues to impress, moving Leighton Baines into a defensive midfield role should definitely be something Roberto Martinez considers seriously when the time arrives.
