Shane Long and David Meyler celebrate the Republic of Ireland's win against Germany on Twitter

The Republic of Ireland beat Germany 1-0 in Euro 2016 qualifying.

Southampton's Shane Long and Hull City's David Meyler have celebrated the Republic of Ireland's win over Germany on social media site Twitter.

Martin O'Neill's side managed to beat the world champions 1-0 at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday evening, in what was one of the shock results of the night.

It is surely a victory which will go down in Irish footballing folklore, and the win pushed the Boys in Green a step closer to qualifying for Euro 2016.

Long's role in the match was crucial. The Saints front-man came off the bench late on, and bagged the winner in the contest.

Long raced onto a long punt from Darren Randolph, before smashing the ball beyond Manuel Neuer in the German net to send his country into delirium.

The 28-year-old has now come out on Twitter to celebrate, and he posted the following message earlier this afternoon.

Meyler, meanwhile, came off the bench in the 69th minute against Germany, and he was also delighted with the victory, which will live long in the memory.
