Report: Sunderland hope to appoint Sam Allardyce as new manager early next week

Sam Allardyce Press Conference 12/02/2014

The former West Ham boss is set for a speedy return to football.

Sunderland hope to appoint Sam Allardyce as their new manager by the start of next week, according to the Daily Mail.

The Black Cats have moved quickly to replace the departed Dick Advocaat and talks between Sunderland owner Ellis Short and Allardyce’s representatives will take place in the next 48 hours, in a bid to have the former West Ham boss in charge for the trip to West Brom on October 17th.

Sunderland will be hopeful Big Sam’s experience of escaping a relegation dogfight in the Premier League will be enough to keep them up after a dismal start to the season.

The Wearside club are yet to record a win and are only above last place on goal difference, with the manner of recent defeats a concern.

There were signs of promise in their most recent outing however, and an excellent first-half showing against West Ham last weekend will give Allardyce confidence that he can get something out of this beleaguered group of players.
