The Villa midfielder was on the winning side in Colombia.
The World Cup in Qatar may seem a long time away but several big teams have already begun their qualification campaigns for the competition.
Yesterday saw the teams from South America take to the field and there were some big shocks in the offing.
Brazil were defeated by Chile, perhaps not to big a surprise. However, Argentina's defeat against Ecuador was certainly unexpected.
But what about Colombia. They defeated Peru in their opening qualifying fixture - thanks to goals from Teo Gutierrez and Edwin Cardona.
Interestingly for Aston Villa fans it was a game in which their midfield general captained his national side for the first time.
With several other big names not in the starting XI the Villa star got the chance instead and put in a solid performance at the heart of the midfield.
He played the full 90 minuted for Jose Pekerman's side and told Colombian As after the game:
"Today we had to run a lot. I congratulate the team for their great effort against Peru, we faced a great team. The qualifiers are increasingly difficult."
Villa fans will be hopeful that he comes through the next game against Uruguay unscathed and can bring his good international form with him to The Midlands.
