Rangers star Martyn Waghorn discusses his new goal target for the season

The summer signing has made a prolific start to life at Ibrox.

Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn is keeping his cards close to his chest when it comes to the revised goal target he has set himself.

Earlier in the season it was revealed that 20 goals was his initial aim but the former Wigan man has enjoyed a fantastic start to the campaign and looks well on course to smash that target.

The 25-year old has notched 14 goals in his first 14 games and has shown no signs of slowing down as the Gers continue their march towards the top flight.

“I’ve had to revise the target. But I’m going to wait until I hit the first one and then try to hit another,” said Waghorn, in quotes published by the Daily Record.

“I want to keep pushing myself and be the best player I can.

“The first target was 20 goals, so I’m nearly there. When I get there, I’ll set another one – but it will be nice to hit that target.”

Given his lofty goal haul already, the question of just how many he can get this season has been raised, but the versatile frontman isn’t getting carried away.

“Forty or fifty is a lot of goals for anyone. I will sit down and have a think once I hit the 20, but as long as we keep getting the three points, that’s what really matters.”

Waghorn is enjoying a rare period of stability in a career that has seen its fair share of difficulties and Rangers are now reaping the rewards.

The former England Under-21 international has never quite realised his early potential but his current form suggests the Gers may have something of a late bloomer on their hands.
