The talented midfielder is hoping to become a first-team regular.
Last season Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner had a very productive spell on loan at Nottingham Forest. He impressed during his time at the City Ground and it was hoped that he might be able to make a breakthrough into the Aston Villa first-team under Tim Sherwood this season.
Unfortunately that is not the case, but it is injury that has hindered him above all.
The midfielder, younger brother of West Brom star Craig, suffered an ankle injury in a pre-season friendly against Swindon Town this summer. That has kept him out of contention for Sherwood, who has admitted he is in his plans for the future.
Today however represented a huge step in the recovery process for Gardner.
He sent out this Tweet earlier today, after starring and scoring for the reserves today.
He sent out this message to his followers:
Was good to play 45 minutes today for the reserves and good to get a goal and a win another step up #avfc— Gary Gardner (@22Gards) October 8, 2015
Gardner has suffered a series of setbacks in his career but after the form he showed at Forest last season many a Villa fan is hopeful he can go on to become a hit in the club's first-team.
Now he is on the road to recovery, who knows where it might lead.
