Mesut Ozil backs Arsenal for title challenge and to beat Bayern Munich

The German says the win over Manchester United on Sunday shows they can beat anyone on their day.

Speaking to Bild, Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has backed his side to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners were hotly tipped for a title challenge this season having won their second successive FA Cup at the end of last season, finishing the campaign as one of Europe’s most in-form sides.

They have had a solid if uninspiring start to the campaign with Sunday’s 3-0 demolition of Manchester United showing their credentials once again, and Ozil says they can win the title this season.

“We have a great team with many world-class players,” Ozil told Bild.

“Our goal is to win the Premier League and I think that this season it’s possible to do it, if we all stay healthy. But the season is long.”

The midfielder also believes that the comprehensive win over United shows they can pose a challenge to Bayern Munich when the sides meet in the Champions League on 20 October.

Arsene Wenger’s side have had a disastrous start to their Champions League campaign this season, with defeats to both Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos leaving their hopes of qualifying for the latter stages hanging by a thread.

They now have two games against the in form Germans to come, with many expecting Pep Guardiola’s side to be comfortable winners. Ozil though, insists he and his teammates have no fear going into the game.

“Our victory against Manchester United was a sign: when we play and want it 100%, then we can beat Bayern,” he added.

“We are playing at home. Although we have respect for them, we don’t have any fear. We know how to score goals against Bayern and we can be successful. It will be difficult – but we have the potential to beat any team.”
