Joe Gomez: Liverpool's best defender this season - Good job Rodgers?

Has former Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez been Liverpool's best defender this season?

The poor performances of players signed by Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers may have contributed to his sacking as manager, but it was not all negative.

Teenager Joe Gomez has been superb since his summer switch from Charlton Athletic, defying anybody who thought he would just be a back-up player and sit in the under-21s.

Rating a defender on the basis of key performance indicators, tackles won, interceptions, aerial duels won, and shots blocked on a per game basis, while factoring in any goals or assists made too, Gomez has been the best to feature in Liverpool's backline this season in Premier League competition.

Alberto Moreno 1.14 0.71 0.14 1.14 0 1 0 4.14 7

Gomez's two won tackles per game are the joint highest in defence, while his interceptions per game better his teammates. He is also one of just two Liverpool defenders to provide an assist this season, along with Alberto Moreno.

Physically he is not ready to be the type of defender to win more aerial duels than Mamadou Sakho or Martin Skrtel, but holds his own, with his figures (1.8) more than Alberto Moreno (0.14) and Nathaniel Clyne (0.38) combined.

The fact Gomez has managed this, while playing in an often overly complicated tactical approach from Brendan Rodgers highlights his talent, and he already looks like one of the best signings of the summer.

He may just become Brendan Rodgers' greatest gift to Liverpool in years to come - if of course you believe the manager identified and pushed for his signing in the first place.
