England have made two late additions to their squad for this week's upcoming matches, with Andros Townsend and Kyle Walker of Tottenham called up.
The FA confirmed the decision via their official website last night after Everton defender John Stones pulled out with injury.
Hodgson is a big fan of Townsend, who has performed well for England when given the chance, but this season his performances have not merited international recognition.
It is a surprise considering the form of another Premier League winger eligible for selection, Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace.
|Team||Goals||Assists||Chances Created||Dribbles||Accurate Crosses||Appearances|
|Wilfried Zaha||C. Palace||1||0||11||22||7||8|
The difference between the two is plain to see. Zaha has been playing, while Townsend has barely figured in the Premier League.
Zaha would like more goals and assists to add to his game, and perhaps that is what he really needs to catch Hodgson's eye, but the rest of his game has been impressive, and right now he is offering more than Townsend has for Spurs this season.
England are already qualified for Euro 2016, and the upcoming games against Estonia and Lithuania are ideal for Roy Hodgson to experiment with players like Zaha who need an opportunity to show what they can do.
Instead he has gone for a more tried and tested option in Townsend, but perhaps what the Spurs star needs is to be omitted, to drive him on to look for a move away from the club in January where he will play regularly.
Palace fans were not impressed with Hodgson's decision, here is a look at the reaction via Twitter...
Zaha in for Townsend is a no-brainer.. However, picking Townsend shows you have no brain.— Carl Mortimer (@CarlMSX) October 6, 2015
Hodgson watched Zaha against WBA, but still chose to pick Andros Townsend.... Not saying Zaha deserves it right now, but more than Townsend!— Tøm Purcell (@tompurcell35) October 6, 2015
How can you watch Zaha last two weeks and say he don't deserve a call up (especially when Townsend is getting picked over him)— Rhys (@Cxbaye) October 6, 2015
How can Hodgson call up Townsend ahead of Zaha? And he was there to see Wilf dazzle on Saturday. Very disappointing.— Bruce Millington (@brucemillington) October 6, 2015
Jason Puncheon has been playing consistently well for last 2 years, Zaha getting better every game... Townsend makes the England squad??
