News of an injury to the Dutch full-back has rocked Newcastle but Vernon Anita could be a solid, if temporary, stand in.
Any potential injury to Daryl Janmaat - as reported on by the Chronicle - would represent a significant blow to the already beleaguered Newcastle United, but the Toon could have a more than adequate stand-in available.
Vernon Anita is no full-back by any means, with the 26-year-old traditionally deployed in central midfield.
But should Janmaat’s stiff knee turn into something more serious in the days running up to a crucial clash with Norwich City in the Premier League, then Steve McClaren could do worse than look at the Dutchman.
Back during his days playing under Martin Jol at Ajax, Anita found himself playing at full-back following a long-term injury to Thimothee Atouba and the suspension of Urby Emanuelson.
He excelled in his new role, and remained in the position for the remainder of the campaign, helping the Amsterdam side claim the KNVB Cup.
Though, perhaps understandably, far from ideal, the current wealth of central midfield options at the club mean that Anita could easily slot in again, should Janmaat’s current issue become something more serious.
Magpie fans, however, will be hoping it doesn’t come to that as Newcastle go in search of their first Premier League win of the season.
