Spurs fans urge Pochettino to rest Harry Kane, discuss January implications

The Tottenham Hotspur striker is already an icon but many supporters feel a rest is needed.

Tottenham fans have been discussing their team selection after the 2-2 draw at Swansea City on Sunday afternoon and it appears one man is the hot favourite for the drop.

Indeed, the White Hart hero of last season Harry Kane hasn't quite lived up to the heights of last term yet. And some supporters want boss Mauricio Pochettino to drop (or rest, depending on your viewpoint) the striker following the first eight games of the season.

Christian Eriksen 2 2 12 5 53 362
Toby Alderweireld 1 0 1 2 36 720
Nacer Chadli 1 1 17 5 81 602
Dele Alli 1 0 5 6 51 412
Harry Kane 1 0 11 16 81 685

As Opta stats show, the obvious problems that have held Kane back - 'second-season syndrome,' an eagerness to impress etc - have led to him scoring just one goal in eight Premier League games so far this season.

The 22-year-old is also yet to register an assist but has created 11 chances, won 16 dribbles and completed 81 final-third passes.

He has been outscored by Christian Eriksen (who only scored his first goals of the season on Sunday) and Eric Dier - primarily a holding midfielder this campaign.

So are Tottenham fans right to want their star man rested? And will Spurs create plenty of transfer market drama in pursuit of another forward in January? Here's what readers have been saying in the comments section on HITC Sport...

Tony Borg says: 'Need to drop Harry Kane too but oh sorry I forgot, we haven't got any other strikers. Wonder if Levy the mug will buy another in January?'

George (in reply to Tony Borg) says: 'I Must put my hands up and agree wholeheartedly with you on this one Tony!!

'It's negligence of the highest order!!'

Jack James says: 'Needs a rest badly. He hasn't played one full season before, let alone two in a row. The kid can't carry the burden upfront on his own. I hope that recruitment team are working overtime to have a deal in place for January the first.'

Dave Crossy says: 'Kane needs to stop trying to hard, let the game come to him! Andros still the player he'll always be, shoot always pass NEVER! No end product! Levy will always be LOOKING for a striker in Jan, but that's all! Maybe Damio will be available AGAIN lool'

Victor67 says: 'Agree with Tony Borg. We tried to sign Berahino 4 times this season. Kane is still coming to terms ..

'Son is resting.. N no other strikers. N again now Kane is ...having some loss of confidence

'No doubt his talent..can shoot w both feet ..is all there. Need more time..but in d meantime Spurs need d goals

'Come January..have a go again n get Berahino..as England colleagues n they can help each other at same club..Spurs n also when with England.'

Tellie Bee says: 'We look thin up top and need another front player but to be more realistic 2 due to future injuries. Its a shame as we are starting to look good.

'January window crucial for us if we are to get anywhere. Lets hope we can negotiate before it starts. Shame about Beradinho but a cheeky raid on Swansea for Ayew would do the trick. I,ve watched him all season and he is a Poch player with class.'
