Rio Ferdinand says Wayne Rooney is a better all round player than Alan Shearer.
Rio Ferdinand has told Breathe Sport he believes Wayne Rooney is a better all round player than Alan Shearer was.
Rooney broke England's all time goalscoring record last month, eclipsing the great Sir Bobby Charlton.
Ferdinand is a former teammate of Wayne Rooney for Manchester United, yet also featured in England squads alongside Shearer early in his career.
Ferdinand said: "Wayne has turned himself around from the street football player we all saw in his early years to someone who is seeking out record-breaking milestones.
"He wasn’t a natural finisher like others such as Ruud van Nistelrooy or Alan Shearer, but he had much more of an impact in his all round game."
“To become England’s leading goalscorer and current Manchester United captain is a great achievement.
Shearer scored 30 international goals for England in 63 games, a strike rate akin to Rooney's 50 in 107 appearances.
Where the Newcastle ace did memorably do it, was at an international tournament, scoring five goals at Euro '96, while his two goals at World Cup '98 is better than the one Rooney has managed in 2006, 2010, and 2014 combined.
Shearer has a record of 379 league career goals, which Rooney still has some way to catch, with 252 in total, but at the age of 29, time is still on the Manchester United's striker's side to overtake the former Blackburn title winner.
