The versatile defender has proven his worth in recent weeks.
Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu is set for a spell on the sidelines, after suffering a hamstring injury in Saturday’s defeat against Manchester City, but has told the Shields Gazette he is hoping for a speedy recovery.
The 20-year old was signed from Swiss club Servette in January 2013 and largely flew under the radar until being thrust into the limelight due to an injury crisis at left-back.
A solid showing in his debut against Sheffield Wednesday was followed up by an excellent performance in last week’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea and ensured Mbabu kept his place for trip to the Etihad.
The Swiss under-19 international was powerless to prevent Sergio Aguero from stealing the show and hobbled off in the second half with a hamstring issue.
The promising defender was in reflective mood following his tough weekend and spoke of his desire to return to fitness sooner rather than later.
“One day everything goes well, the day after everything goes wrong,” he told the Shields Gazette.
"I just need to keep doing what I’ve been doing the past few months and see how it goes.”
“I will have a scan (on the injury) and I hope it’s not too bad. I hope I can get back soon to help the team.”
Newcastle have been boosted by the news that both Haidara and Dummett are close to returns and on Mbabu’s first few showings, the fight for a starting berth at left-back is sure to be an intriguing one.
