Report: Aston Villa to offer wages of £50,000 per week to land top target

Benik Afobe

Aston Villa are ready to splash out to try and sign Benik Afobe.

Aston Villa are planning to try to sign Benik Afobe from Wolves, report The Sun.

The former Arsenal trainee netted his 50th career goal at the weekend, as he fired Wolves to a 3-0 win over Huddersfield.

Aston Villa slumped to a defeat against Stoke City, and have not won a Premier League game since the opening weekend of the season.

The Sun report Aston Villa are preparing to offer £10 million for Afobe, and will put forward a £50,000 per week wage packet to attempt to convince the striker to sign.

The report adds that Villa would go above £10 million if required, so determined are they to get their man.

Not so straightforward

Villa are clearly hoping that money and opportunity talks, but Wolves managed to hang onto Afobe in the face of Premier League interest in the recent transfer window.

Norwich City had three bids rejected for Afobe in August, reported The BBC, with the highest around £10 million.

Wolves even issued a statement on their official website declaring none of their key players would be sold this season, which would encompass January, and sets their stall out.

Newcastle United are showing an interest, The Mirror reported over the weekend. Joining either Villa or Newcastle could however back fire for Afobe, even if he would benefit financially.

Both sides are in the Premier League relegation zone, while Wolves are in the top 10 in the Championship and likely to be in the play-off hunt. The striker would be better off waiting until the end of the season before considering his next move, and which division he would stand to play in.
