Report: Newcastle monitoring Debuchy, is Janmaat's place under threat?

A report suggests the Magpies are eyeing a shock return for the Arsenal defender.

Newcastle United are eyeing up a shock move for Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy, according to the Daily Star.

The Frenchman left St James' Park for Arsenal in the summer of 2014 but has struggled for game time since.

And the Star report that old club Newcastle are considering bringing the 30-year-old back to Tyneside.

Debuchy has occasionally played at centre-back for the Gunners but is mainly a right-back, with Hector Bellerin keeping him out of the Arsenal side in that area.

The premise of Debuchy returning to St James' Park is interesting - primarily because Daryl Janmaat has been heavily praised since succeeding him.

It makes perfect sense for Newcastle to try and sign a defender - any defender - considering their horrendous defensive record. It may make even more sense when you think Debuchy was extremely popular on Tyneside.

But the Frenchman inevitably lost some of that popularity when he left Newcastle for Arsenal, while he would surely be second choice behind Janmaat were he actually to return.

Next up for Newcastle after the international break is a clash against Norwich City at St James' Park.
