David James says Man United should pick Sergio Romero, not David De Gea

The ex-Liverpool and England stopper has stated that the Argentine is a better option than the Spaniard.

Former goalkeeper David James has made the controversial statement that Sergio Romero deserves to be Manchester United’s number one, not David De Gea, as reported by Star Sports.

The Spain international is widely regarded as one of the best in his position in world football, with the former Atletico Madrid custodian being named as the club’s player of the season last term.

De Gea missed the first couple of games of the new campaign due to ongoing transfer speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid, with a deal to take him back to his homeland falling through at the 11th hour.

The highly gifted stopper has since penned a new deal at Old Trafford, with Louis van Gaal restoring him as the team’s number one as a result.

Romero, who joined the club in the summer on a free transfer, kept three clean sheets in the team’s opening games of the season, but was culpable in defeat to Swansea.

Despite De Gea’s quality, James has stated that he feels that the Argentina international is a better option for the club between the sticks.

Man United do let in quite a few goals,” the retired player told Star Sports.

“Romero started the season and kept three clean sheets. We were all questioning why David De Gea wasn’t playing and he comes back into the team and keeps one clean sheet.

“I think he makes some wonderful saves and is very athletic but in the bigger picture of the goalkeeping art he doesn’t help Man United out as much as Romero can.”
