HITC Sport understands that the sporting director will be leaving in the near future.
Sunderland have denied reports that Lee Congerton has quit the club, but it is understood that he will be leaving in the near future, and he is set to be joined by Dick Advocaat in departing the Stadium of Light.
Congerton and Advocaat's exits are not intrinsically linked, although both are a result of their poor form which sees them sat bottom of the Premier League standings.
Since arriving at the club in early 2014, Congerton has failed to turn around the club's fortunes and has numerous failures to go with that in the transfer market.
HITC Sport revealed in September that Congerton's position was under threat, and now it is understood that talks are underway regarding his departure, but there are issues over his contract that need resolving.
It is also the belief within the Stadium of Light that Advocaat will step down from his role in charge, and Sunderland are understood to be looking for his replacement.
Burnley boss Sean Dyche has been linked, while Harry Redknapp is also understood to be keen but Sam Allardyce - a former Sunderland player - could emerge as the front-runner to return to the North East.
