Alan Shearer on Newcastle’s game against Manchester City

Newcastle United, who drew 2-2 with Chelsea last weekend, will face Manchester City in the Premier League this afternoon.

Alan Shearer has written on Coral.co.uk that the Newcastle United fans will not complain if the team do not win against Manchester City despite playing well.

Newcastle will take on City away from home at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League this afternoon.

Steve McClaren’s side will head into the game as underdogs, with Manuel Pellegrini’s home team heavy favourites to win.

Former Newcastle striker Shearer believes that the Magpies' fans will understand if the team lose, but only if the players play like the way they did against Chelsea last weekend.

“I hope the penny has dropped for Newcastle because that draw against Chelsea should give them confidence,” the former England international wrote on Coral.co.uk.

“Nobody was complaining with that result last weekend even though they were 2-0 up because you could see effort and commitment from the players.

"If the same thing happens again against City and they don’t win, the fans would accept that.”

Newcastle failed to win against Chelsea at home last weekend, but their performance against the defending Premier League champions was much better than in previous weeks.

The Magpies were actually 2-0 up at one stage at St. James' Park, but they conceded twice late on to settle for a share of the spoils.

Not many Newcastle fans will expect McClaren’s side to win against City today, but they will certainly want the players to maintain the levels they showed against Chelsea last weekend.
