Newcastle dealt fresh injury blow ahead of Manchester City clash

St James Park

The Magpies meet the Citizens at the Etihad on Saturday.

Newcastle United have been dealt another injury blow with the news that Gabriel Obertan will miss Saturday's trip to Manchester City, according to the Chronicle.

The Frenchman has been much-improved this season and has forced his way into Steve McClaren’s plans, but now faces a spell on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury in training.

The former Manchester United winger joins fellow wide man Rolando Aarons on the absent list for tomorrow’s game, in what is a real weakening of the Magpies attacking options.

Elsewhere, Jack Colback is a doubt after suffering a knee injury in last weekend’s draw with Chelsea, and will undergo a late fitness test to determine his availability.

Left-back Massadio Haidara remains out and will likely be covered again by the emerging talent Kevin Mbabu.

“We have quite a few injuries. Jack is the only one who has a chance. Gabby and Rolando are out,” said Steve McClaren.

Newcastle travel to the Etihad with the odds stacked against them, but will take confidence from City’s recent defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United and will look to make it two upsets in seven days come 5pm tomorrow.
