The Magpies travel to the Etihad on Saturday.
The 24-year-old has settled well into life in England and, along with Chancel Mbemba, has been the pick of the bunch of the Magpies’ summer signings.
The Citizens bounced back with a Champions League win against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday and will hope to take that form back into their domestic duties.
The odds are stacked against Newcastle, but Wijnaldum feels the competitive nature of the English game gives every team a chance.
“Every game in the Premier League is tough,” he told the Chronicle.
“Even when you play teams that aren’t in the first 10. That’s football here. So you can lose any game, but win any game - including City.
“You always have a big chance to win, even against the big teams.”
West Ham United’s recent win at the Etihad demonstrated what a disciplined, compact away side can achieve, but the Magpies will need to be at their optimum if they are to leave with any reward.
City should be buoyant after their midweek result and frustrating Manuel Pellegrini’s assortment of stars in the early stages will be key for Newcastle.
