The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has reflected on a fine recent performance.
Tottenham defeated Sunderland, Crystal Palace and – most impressively – Manchester City in September and they now face AS Monaco as they look to maintain their 100 per cent start to their Europa League campaign.
Vertonghen has quickly developed an effective centre-back pairing with his Belgian international teammate Toby Alderweireld and he has now explained why he feels they got that famous victory against City last weekend.
“We all want to fight for each other,” Vertonghen told tottenhamhotspur.com. “This team is a bunch of young guys, a bunch of friends and that showed on the pitch on Saturday.
“We were fighting for each other for 90-plus minutes and that was reflected in the score-line.”
It certainly was, and that team spirit bodes well for the matches yet to come, with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino no doubt targeting some silverware and a top-four finish come May.
The latter may be particularly tricky given the other sides competing at the top of the Premier League but Tottenham showed against City that they can beat anyone on their day, and if that day is more often than not, who knows what this season could bring?
