Tottenham confident against Champions League quality Monaco, says Carroll

Tom Carroll low quality

Spurs take on the French side on Thursday evening looking to make it six points from two games in the Europa League.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Tottenham midfielder Tom Carroll says the side are positive they can win against Champions League quality Monaco.

The two sides face each other in the Europa League on Thursday, with Spurs keen to secure their second win of the competition after beating Qarabag in the opening round of games.

They don’t have a good history against the French side though, having been beaten 5-2 by them when they met in a pre-season friendly back in 2013.

But Carroll insists they are heading there in full confidence following the recent 4-1 win over Manchester City in the Premier League.

“Obviously last time we went to Monaco it wasn’t the best result, but we go there now off the back of a great result against City,” he told tottenhamhotspur.com.

“The lads are feeling confident and we’re looking forward to it, we’re playing well at the moment, moving the ball about nicely and I’m sure it will be a good game.”

Monaca and Anderlecht Champions League quality

The midfielder is however anticipating a tough game against Monaco despite his side’s confidence.

This time last season they were competing in the Champions League, in a run that would eventually see them knock out Tottenham’s rivals Arsenal in a shock win of the latter stages of the competition.

And although they didn’t qualify for the tournament again this season, Carroll still believes they and group rivals Anderlecht are of Champions League quality.

“Monaco will be a strong side, no doubt” he added.

“They have lost a couple of players but I think they’re of Champions League pedigree along with Anderlecht but hopefully we can go there, put our style on the game and get the win ourselves.”
