Liverpool's Joe Gomez congratulates Tareiq Holmes-Dennis on new Charlton deal

The two youngsters graduated from the Addicks academy together, and while Gomez is making a name for himself at Liverpool, his former teammate is looking to break into Guy Luzon's side.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez took to Twitter on Wednesday to congratulate his former Charlton Atheltic teammate Tareiq Holmes-Dennis on signing a new deal at the Valley.

The pair came up through the Charlton youth teams together, and though Holmes-Dennis has yet to make his league debut for the Londoners, the Championship outfit clearly rate him after offering a contract until 2018, while Morgan Fox was also granted a one-year contract extension.

Holmes-Dennis made his full debut in the League Cup this season after previous spells on loan at Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle.

If Gomez is anything to judge the Addicks' academy by, former England Under-18 man Holmes-Dennis is someone certainly worth keeping an eye. Alongside fellow Charlton graduate turned Liverpool player Jonjo Shelvey, Gomez represents some of the very best in young English talent to emerge on the scene in the last five years.

A year younger than Holmes-Dennis at 18-years-old, Gomez started the first five Premier League games of the season in an unfamiliar left back spot after impressing Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers with his performances in pre-season. The England Under-21 star seems to be capable of playing in any position across the defence, making him a hugely promising and versatile player for the Reds to have at their disposal.

With Liverpool likely to continue experimenting with three central defenders for the foreseeable future, Gomez could well find a regular position for himself in the middle given his encouraging start. Having seen Alberto Moreno start at left wing-back against Norwich last week, the young Englishman could be involved against Sion in the Europa League on Thursday night in his more natural role.
