According to German media outlet Bild, Liverpool are hoping to complete a deal for Leroy Sane, the young winger who has been impressing with Schalke recently.
Sane is a highly sought-after player, who, at 19-years-old, is already a key figure in Schalke’s team. He scored four goals in 14 games last season after breaking into the side under Roberto Di Matteo, and this term he has already hit the back of the net three times in just nine games.
The Bild report claims that Liverpool have been tracking Sane for a long time, and even attempted to sign him in the summer, making an offer of roughly £12 million which was swiftly rejected by the Bundesliga side.
However, it is stated that they will continue to fight for his signature, and will make an offer for the German youth international in the January transfer window, before following that up next summer if they still fail to sign him.
Despite Liverpool’s interest, they are facing competition for Sane’s signature from one of their Premier League rivals, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly also hoping to sign the talented winger.
Der Westen reported last week that Spurs are hoping to bring Sane to White Hart Lane in the near future, having been tracking him over the summer. The report claims that Tottenham were not put off by Schalke’s stance of having no intention to sell Sane, and are ready to make another approach for him.
With both Premier League sides hoping to bring in the winger, there is little chance Schalke will be able to keep ahold of a player destined to be a future star, and it will be up to Sane to decide whether his future lies in London or on Merseyside.
