Leeds United legend Giles has praised the skills of Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.
Speaking to the Herald, Leeds United and Ireland legend Johnny Giles has praised Jack Grealish’s development as a player, admitting that it will be galling to see the talented youngster play for England.
Giles said: “I’ve watched Grealish since his name first emerged and I've seen a talented kid progress to the point where he can influence Premier League matches. He has talent on the ball, off it, he can score goals and he can make goals. It would be galling in the extreme if [Roy] Hodgson introduces him quickly to senior international football and we have to watch him playing in France 2016 in a white shirt with three lions embossed on the badge.”
Grealish confirmed this week that he intends to play for England in the future, turning down the chance of consistent caps for Ireland to fight for a role with the Three Lions.
An impressive talent, 20-year-old Grealish has shown himself to a be a top level attacker in his displays in the Premier League, although he is far from consistent enough to be fighting for an England call-up yet.
Giles has admitted that he will be distressed to see Grealish turning out for England rather than in the green of Ireland, with the former Leeds hero having seen him develop from Irish youth international to being on the verge of Hodgson’s senior set-up.
Giles has praised his talents as an attacking player, and he is someone who many expect could have gone on to be a key player for Ireland in the future. There are few playmakers in Martin O’Neill’s squad right now, and Grealish would have been something of a guaranteed pick for every international squad in the near future.
However, he opted to choose the country of his birth, and although Leeds legend Giles is disappointed with the choice, England fans are glad to have secured the services of a player who has shown all the talent to suggest he can get to the top of the game.
